ART PRESERVATION AND ARCHAEOLOGY

SAN GEMINI HISTORIC PRESERVATION PROGRAM (SUMMER I and II 2010)

The Department of Art History and Studio Art at John Cabot University sponsores a summer study and research program in the field of Historic Preservation Methods in the city of San Gemini (Umbria). This program involves lectures, workshops on fresco painting, fieldwork, surveying and restoring a medieval church as well as visits to active restoration sites and research institutes.

The Program also includes visits to various cities in central Italy, including Rome, Florence, and Siena, and the opportunity to live for several weeks in a small medieval city in the beautiful Umbrian countryside, getting to know the locals and particpating in social events.

The program is a collaboration between JCU, scholars from various universities and local preservation groups, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to historic preservation. For more information, see http://www.sangeministudies.info/

POROLISSUM FORUM PROJECT (mid-June – late July 2010)

This is a joint American-Romanian archaeological project at the Roman site of Porolissum, located in the Transylvanian region of Romania. Directed by Prof. Eric De Sena (JCU) and Dr. Alexandru Matei (Salaj County Museum of History and Art), this project seeks to understand the urban history of Porolissum and the realties of daily life during the Roman (CE 106-271) and post-Roman (CE 271-1050) phases of the city.

Field School Students are trained in traditional methods of archaeological research – excavation, drawing, study of artifacts and digital mapping. In addition to the five-week excavation season, we lead field trips within Transylvania and in the Maramures region in order to teach students about Romania from pre-history to the modern day.
