Sighisoara is located in the mountainous heart of Transylvania. The city has a long
history and possesses a wealth of architectural treasures that date between
the 13th and 17th centuries. Sighisoara is best known, however, as the
birthplace of Vlad Tepes - Count Dracula! Vlad Tepes was the son of Vlad
Dracul, Commander of Troops in Valacchia. Vlad Tepes was held as a hostage
by the Turks together with his brother and while in Turkey, learned many
horrible ways to torture human beings. Upon his return to Transylvania
Vlad became a Count. As Count, he became known as "Vlad the Impaler"
because of the characteristic way he put to death his enemies.
The city is rather small, but it is a gem worth visiting. Sighisoara hosts
a number of churches, including one of the oldest Gothic churches in Romania,
an impressive clock tower, many shops, pubs and restaurants. A long, covered
wooden stairway leads to the Gothic basilica and an early modern cemetery
at the highest point of the city.
